Tackle Advice

As this is a fly only beat, you need only come prepared for fly fishing. There are wide pools and wading is often required.

Rod

A double handed fly rod of at least 15 feet is recommended.

Reel

A large capacity salmon fly reel with adequate backing – 200 yards is good.

Flylines

Floating, intermediate/sink tip and full sinking, depending on the conditions or time of year. Attachable tips are popular.

Flies

All the usual favourites. Large Waddingtons or tubes in the spring gradually going down to 8s and 10s in the summer.

Waders

Chest waders are recommended, but please wear an inflatable life jacket. The Spey is a powerful river.

Clothing

Personal choice, depending on time of year. Short wading jacket is recommended.

Landing Fish

There is no ghillie, and you may be on your own. Many of the locals beach their fish when conditions allow. A net is often handy. Fish to be returned should be handled carefully and not removed from the water if possible.

Tackle Shops

A  range of suitable equipment may be available in Aberlour and Elgin, but the main salmon tackle shops are in Grantown, Aberdeen and Inverness.

For emergencies, or for anglers who do not have suitable tackle, we have 4 salmon fly fishing outfits for hire (rod, reel, line and backing) - 14ft; 15ft and 16ft. Hire is available only to anglers fishing our beat. Please phone for full details.
